Program Structure & Courses

Each semester, you'll enroll in 12-18 US credits (up to 30 ECTS credits). Typically, you'll enroll in 4-6 courses per semester. Contact hours and meeting times vary; courses may be structured through a combination of seminars, lectures, or tutorials.

You will have access to introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in your selected study stream: Business, Education, Engineering & Computing, Humanities & Social Sciences, Science & Health. More advanced courses have pre-requisites, so be sure to check that you meet their requirements if any are listed on the DCU website. See below for information how to access the DCU courses for each stream.

Within your selected study stream, you can select up to 5 courses from the stream's list of 'Modules' (the term used for 'courses' in Ireland), then choose one optional course from the stream's list of 'Electives'.

You'll "pre-register" by submitting course selections and alternates to CEA CAPA before you leave for Dublin. Upon arrival in Ireland, you will have one week to make changes to your course selections, so long as the courses you are intending to move to are not full.

It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses (at least 8) approved by your home university prior to your pre-registration due to course availabilities. No module is ever guaranteed until the beginning of each semester at DCU. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Navigating the Dublin City University Website for Courses

CEA CAPA knows it's important to make sure the credit you earn abroad will transfer back to your school at home. Fortunately, it's easy to find what you need in Dublin, because Dublin City University (DCU) offers such a wide variety of courses. In order to choose your courses for your upcoming program at DCU you will need to follow the steps below:

Choosing Your Courses

Step One:

View DCU courses by 'Study Stream' by clicking on the links below. Syllabi can be accessed here.

Step Two:
Choose modules from the listed study streams you are interested in taking - you may choose 12-18 US credits (up to 30 ECTS credits) worth of modules in one semester. Please indicate additional modules and list in order of preference, as places may not be available in each of the modules. It is best to have 7 modules in mind initially (6 core modules and 1 elective). DCU credits are allocated according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Under this system, 3 US credits typically equals 5 or 6 ECTS.

Indicate your choices on the Study Abroad Program Application Form from your Student Portal. Please do not use the application form found on the website for DCU courses.  Please note that courses listed on the application are an indication of your course preferences ONLY.  Final registration will take place through completing the pre-registration form before your arrival in Dublin.

Please verify with your university the amount of credits you will receive for the courses you are taking so that you maintain a full-time status abroad.

Helpful Hints when choosing your modules:

Demand for some modules is extremely high. Please bear in mind that it is not always possible to guarantee admission to particular modules, although we will do our best to offer you places in the modules you prefer.

  • As there is a wide range of modules open to visiting students at DCU, it is important to ensure that careful consideration is given when selecting modules. For instance, a student without a background in a particular subject should not, in general, choose a specialized third year course in the subject. There will also be occasional but inevitable incompatibilities because of timetable conflicts or some other logistical problems. Students should consult with their academic advisors at their home universities before specifying their module choices.
  • CEA CAPA encourages you to print the course descriptions and review them with your academic advisor at your home campus. It is important to get a variety of courses approved in writing by your home university prior to your departure.

If you have further questions regarding how to select courses of about the CEA CAPA program at DCU in Dublin, please contact a CEA CAPA Student Advisor at 1-800-266-4441.
